Understanding is a word which is a little bit hard to explain. Because it’s general, includes everything, and not all of people can implant it in their hearts. Understanding each other is one of the best way to get peace, erase the war, destroy the discrimination, save the world, and create a big smile.

Understanding is a word which is a little bit hard to explain. Because it’s general, includes everything, and not all of people can implant it in their hearts. Understanding each other is one of the best way to get peace, erase the war, destroy the discrimination, save the world, and create a big smile.

If we talk about “Understanding”, it aims into “The Difference”. In this universe, God creates everything which is different. God wants to make us think more, big, and smart that we are different in everything. Therefore, we have to learn about understanding and respect each other. To be a person who has ‘understanding’ skill, someone doesn’t have to be an educated person. Because still, there are many educated people who can’t understand each other. So, to be a person who has ‘understanding’ skill, we just have to use our brain and heart in a genius way.

Well, reader... here the writer talks about “understanding” because on the January 17th, 2014 there was an event about Cross Culture in Jogja English building. English Home as one sub unit of Jogja English Group held that event to make the members understand about difference in every country. That sounds good, doesn’t that?

English Home (E.H) named that event as a ‘Cross Cultural Night’. E.H held this event as monthly program which is called English Action Night (EAN). EAN was held to improve the speaking ability of English Home members (Male&Female English Home) by presenting about culture in some countries. The countries are: Canada, India, United Kingdom, Philippine, and Nigeria. The members should present the materials fully in English. They had to explain about the culture and traditional things from the English Speaking Countries. The members were divided into five groups (two male groups and three female groups). Male groups were by Haidar (Kelik) who presented Philippine and  Dimas who presented Nigeria. The 1st female group members were by Cat Middle East (July) and Emma Wati (Fio) who presented the United Kindom. The 2nd female group members were by Mara Harper(Mara), Ms. Revalina (Nia), and Princess Dewi (Dewi) who presented Canada. The 3rd female group members were Muttaqin (Atik) and Intan who presented about India. The presenters should be able to present about the culture of the countries and answer all of questions in English, no exception! The hard thing was... While they were answering about the questions, they were assessed by the judges who come from Australia, Philippine, and India. So, the members should speak in English with a good pronounciation. If they didn’t, the judges wouldn’t understand about it. Fortunately, all of the members could do it perfectly.

Then, continued on the second session. It was presentation from the Judges from their own countries. Every judges presented about many things in cultures, histories, the condition of the countries, and the most interesting things was they danced. More precisely, they danced traditional dance. It made the situation more fun. Every body was on fire.

On the last session, the Cross Cultural Night event was closed by the host. But... it hasn’t finished yet, and it’s not going to be finished from this Cross Culture event Because there are a lot of lessons and knowledges from this event. They are:

1. Understanding the difference.
2. Learning new knowledges and cultures.
3. Open the mindset to be more respectful to other people.
4. Receive different culture, habit, attitude, and mindset.
5. Knowing each other without seeing the status.
6. Learn about humanities.

God creates sky and earth and language differences and your skin colours because He wants to make this universe beautiful

Thank you.

Mar’atus Sholihah
